Nine Years In Bordeaux And Three Decades Of Deciding It Was Easier Not To Mention Any Of It

Rosalind did not understand a word and sat there watching her fiancé’s parents change colour. I translated it for her afterward, on the deck, and she cried, and then she was furious, mostly at me, for eleven years of never once speaking a language she had not known I still carried.

Solange came to find me the next morning before anybody else was up. She did not apologise for what she said about my daughter until the third attempt, and when she finally managed it she did it properly, in English, so Rosalind could hear. Gaspard has never apologised. He sends wine at Christmas, which I suspect is his version.

The wedding was in October in Liège. I gave a short speech in French. Rosalind made me practise it four times and then cried through all of it anyway.

I teach an adult conversation class on Wednesday evenings now. Eight students, two of whom are better than I am.

I spent thirty four years learning to take up as little room as possible, and I had convinced myself the woman who moved to France alone at twenty three was somebody I had invented. She was not. She was simply waiting, and she was still fluent, and the night I finally let her speak was the night my daughter got to see who her mother had actually been the whole time.

Aria Lexicon is the pen name of the writer and editor behind The Daily Signal, a site for original short fiction about families, grudges, awkward neighbors and the small decisions that turn into big ones. Every story is invented; every character is made up. When She isn't writing, She's reading other people's stories and trying to figure out why the good ones work.
