When my mom died, the house went quiet in a way I did not know was possible—not peaceful, just empty. At the reading of the will I sat at the far end of the table and listened as the lawyer announced that the house, the savings, everything went to my stepfather. Then he turned to me and said I would need to move out by the end of the week. His son did not hide his smile. Later, leaning in the doorway of my old bedroom, he laughed and said she had never loved me the way I thought and that I had never been real family. I did not argue. Grief had drained the energy to fight. I packed my clothes and books and left the house I had grown up in without looking back. That night I slept on a friend’s couch, staring at the ceiling and wondering if I had imagined her love.

A week passed. Then my phone rang. It was my stepfather. His voice was shaking—not angry, not cold, but broken. He asked me to come right away. I returned to the house I had been pushed out of, bracing for whatever waited inside. He sat on the edge of the bed he once shared with my mom, looking older and hollowed out.
