Thirty Four Years Of Paying For Everything Quietly Until Somebody Handed Me An Invoice For My Own Bedroom I did not answer. She called eleven times before noon and then Dashiell called, and I let all of it ring while I drove north through Connecticut with a cold coffee and the window down. I stopped in Brattleboro for lunch and listened to the voicemails in the car park. The first four were furious. The fifth was about the oil tank. The sixth was Dashiell, quiet, asking where I had gone.

The heating oil ran out on the eleventh of October during a cold snap. The insurance lapsed on the thirty-first because he never transferred it, and he did not discover that until a pipe went in the upstairs bathroom in January and there was no policy to claim on. Marisol’s mother never did get the home health aide. There had never been one. I learned that from Dashiell in the spring, when he finally telephoned and told me the truth about where the money had actually been going, which was an online business Marisol had been enrolled in for two years and had never once earned a dollar from.
