What I took from my jacket was a single folded page. A thirty-day notice to vacate, already signed, already valid, because they were tenants at will in a house that had never carried their names. I set it beside Roderick’s plate and let him read it while the steak went cold. He said it would not hold. I told him, quietly, that I had spent four decades helping companies understand exactly what would and would not hold, and that this would.

The email scheduled for Monday went to my attorney, not to them, and it did two things. It removed Adeline as a beneficiary of the trust and replaced her with a structure she cannot touch and Roderick can never reach. And it froze the one thing they did not know I had been watching, which was the line of credit Roderick had opened eight months earlier using a copy of my deed he had photographed in my study, in an attempt to borrow against a house that was not his. That was the real reason he wanted me useful and quiet. He needed time. The amendment I filed that afternoon closed the door on all of it, and the county recording made his application worthless.
