They were out in thirty days. Roderick’s fraud attempt did not go to trial, because I chose not to press it, which surprised my attorney and surprised me. I did not want to spend my retirement in a courtroom looking at my daughter’s husband.

Adeline came back alone in the spring. She sat at the same table and she cried, and she did not ask for money, which was the first time in years she had sat with me and wanted nothing. That mattered more than any apology.

They separated that summer. She has a small place now that she pays for herself. We have dinner on Sundays. I cook, because I like to, not because anyone assigned it to me.

The seven properties are still mine. So is the chair, and the table, and every decision about what happens next.
