Twenty years after leaving school behind, I had rebuilt every part of my life, yet one memory never faded. Charlotte, the girl who once chose me when nobody else would, now stood at my door delivering food in the rain. She didn’t recognize me, not even for a second, as I took the bag from her shaking hands and noticed how life had treated her far differently than it had treated me.

I invited her back the next evening, placing a small handwritten note inside the order, watching from inside as she hesitated at the door, completely unaware inside waiting

She arrived the next evening looking more anxious than before, clutching the same worn jacket as if it was the only thing keeping her grounded. When she stepped inside, her eyes widened at the warmth, the quiet elegance, and the unfamiliar sense of safety that filled the room. I watched her carefully, waiting for recognition that still hadn’t come, even as I gently closed the door behind her.
