He read it twice before he understood, standing over his father’s desk in the dark study. The envelope did not just disinherit him. It named where every dollar was going, and it was already done, sealed inside an irrevocable trust that no lawyer of his could unwind. The Alzheimer’s Association, in his father’s name. The county library where his mother had taken extra hours for years to send him money. A scholarship fund for the children of caregivers, the people who had sat with Warren when his own son would not. Four point six million dollars, built out of leaking roofs and clipped coupons and clothes worn until they wore out, going to everyone except the boy those sacrifices had been made for.

He told her she was confused. He told her she was being manipulated by the attorney. He told her Warren would never have wanted this, and that was the sentence that ended it, because Adelaide told him, quietly, that Warren had asked in his last clear months who had come to see him, and that she had not had the heart to answer honestly then, and would not lie about it now.
