Four Years Of Paying For A House Where I Was Told Every Single Day That I Lived There For Free

What my father told me on that call was the thing they had been hiding for four years. The house was already two payments behind before I ever stopped. My money had not been covering the mortgage. It had been covering the fact that they had stopped making the full payment themselves long ago and were using my contribution to hide a shortfall from a second loan they took out against the house in 2021, one I never knew existed. When I removed my account, the whole structure showed itself, because there had never been enough underneath it. I had not been helping them stay afloat. I had been the reason they could pretend they were not already sinking.

Dashiell’s car habit made sense too, once I stopped paying for everything. There was no other car because the second one had been repossessed the previous spring, quietly, while I was at work, and nobody had told me.
