She Tossed The Keys On My Table As Though The House Were Already Hers To Redistribute Over Coffee

At five in the morning the coffee was strong and the plates were exact and the folder sat beside Grayson’s cup where he could not miss it. He read the first page standing up, in his robe, and by the third he had put his cup down hard enough to slop it across my counter. Three collapsed ventures. A bankruptcy petition filed eleven weeks before he married my daughter. And underneath those, the cease and desist from my attorney and the notice to vacate by seven.

What Nadia did not know, and what took the wind out of her before the coffee even, was the last document. A quitclaim deed, unsigned, dated the previous week, that Grayson had already had drawn up transferring a half-interest in my house into a holding company registered in his name alone. He had not told her. Her name was nowhere on it. He had been planning to strip the asset out from under both of us, and my daughter’s function in the marriage, I am fairly sure, had been to get him through my front door.
