The Addendum I Attached To Our Divorce That Turned His Victory Into Ruin

Marcus’s lawyer had reached the page I knew she would eventually reach. The addendum I had insisted Patricia attach to the very end of the settlement, the one Marcus never bothered to read because he was too busy imagining his new car. It laid out, in plain legal language, exactly what he was actually receiving. The house, yes. The cars, yes. The savings, yes. And every liability attached to all of it, which was the part he had never once thought about, because in fourteen years of marriage Marcus had never handled a single bill, statement, or tax document. The savings account he was so eager to claim had been drained by his own spending long before he ever asked for a divorce. And the child support he assumed would be “minimal” was about to be calculated against the full, real picture of our finances, which I understood completely and he did not understand at all. Marcus looked up from the table, and the satisfied smile was entirely gone. “This isn’t right,” he said. But it was signed. By him.
