The Message From My Assistant That Turned My Family’s Ruined Vacation Into A Reckoning

unlocked my phone in the middle of that silent lobby and read Colette’s message twice, just to be certain. It was short. “Reviewed the account history you asked about. Richard, sorry, Nathaniel, has been comping personal charges to the executive ledger for six years. Total flagged: two hundred and forty thousand. Full report attached. Legal is asking how you’d like to proceed.” I felt my pulse slow rather than quicken. For six years my father had been quietly draining my grandmother’s ownership account to fund his own lifestyle, the very account he insisted was rightfully his, the one that had just legally become mine.

I looked up at my family. Adeline was still frozen mid-sneer. Grayson had drifted a step away from her, sensing the ground shift. My mother’s face was the color of the marble floor. My father, though, had not yet understood how much trouble he was in. He was still puffing himself up, still preparing whatever speech he used whenever his authority was questioned. So I let him take one step toward me, let him open his mouth to demand an explanation, and then I said the sentence that drained the last of the color from the room.
