The Sealed Envelope My Late Neighbor Left Exposed Everything Her Son Had Hidden

Gordon’s hands trembled as he unfolded his mother’s letter. Ruth’s handwriting filled the page, the same steady script from the water-bill note, and as he read, the anger that had carried him to my door that morning began draining out of his face. She had written it herself, months before she passed, knowing exactly what her son would do once she was gone. She knew he would challenge the will. The unauthorized transfers. The medical evaluation proving she was of sound mind. And then the sentence that made Gordon set the letter down on my table and stare at his own hands. “I am not confused, Gordon. I am simply finally paying attention.” She had changed her will not because a neighbor influenced her, but because her own son had stolen from her and assumed she was too old to notice.
