Designers creating their own invitations can omit the traditional “M” entirely if they wish. A plain “Name” or “Guest Name” line is often clearer and more practical for contemporary events where formal titles matter less.
When filling out an RSVP, guests should follow the host’s instructions carefully: write the names of the invited people, confirm attendance, and answer any extra questions. Only those actually invited should be listed if a limit is specified. In the end, the letter “M” holds no mystery. It is simply the first letter of a courtesy title, followed by space for a name—an old custom that still appears on many cards but no longer needs to dictate how anyone responds.
