On an otherwise ordinary Tuesday afternoon I rode a crowded cross-town bus, seven months pregnant and deeply tired. Every joint ached with the weight of carrying new life. When the doors opened, an elderly woman stepped aboard, moving with careful grace as she scanned for a seat. Without hesitation I stood, anchored myself to the overhead rail, and offered her my place with a smile. She accepted with a soft nod and settled beside me.
As the bus continued, she glanced up at me from time to time—not with curiosity, but with a quiet, familiar tenderness. When her stop arrived she rose carefully, leaned close, and slipped something cool and metallic into my coat pocket. Before I could speak she gave me a small knowing smile and disappeared into the sidewalk crowd. I reached into my pocket and found an antique locket, slightly tarnished and heavy with age.
