A Second Wife Has No Claim to a Car That Was Dad’s

Barbara looked at the stepdaughter who had dropped the key fob into her palm and at the stepson who had studied the porch rail rather than speak. She said only, “I handed him wrenches for fifteen years. He put both our names on that title so no one could tell me the car was never mine.” She did not raise her voice. She simply signed the final papers and left the office.

Within days the buyer returned the Corvette under the frozen title. The cashier’s check was recovered and placed in escrow for Barbara. Kayla and Dylan both received formal demands. Neither returned to the house. Barbara had the car driven back under its cover in the same spot on the driveway where Ray had left it. The oil stain was still there. She stood beside it for a long time, then went inside. The careful man who had spent fifteen years restoring the car had also spent one afternoon making certain it could never be taken from the wife who had kept the coffee coming. The title held. And the woman who had been called a second wife remained the only name that mattered on the paper.
