A Second Wife Doesn’t Get to Sit on a Family Home

Ellen looked at the stepson who had handed her packing tape at eight in the morning and at the memory of the daughter who would not meet her eyes. She spoke only once. “Raymond and I drew that porch on a napkin. I planted every camellia. I held his hand in the back bedroom when he left. A second wife built this home with him.” She did not raise her voice. She simply signed the final acknowledgment and left the office.

That evening Ellen returned to Marsh Wren Lane. The two rocking chairs still sat on the porch where she and Raymond had left them. The camellias were beginning to bloom. No truck returned. No packing tape was needed. Marion called once and left a short, careful message that Ellen did not answer that night. Bennett did not call at all. Ellen made coffee the next morning and sat in the chair that had always been hers. The careful man who had watched his own stepmother put out of a house had kept his word. The life estate held. And the woman who had never tried to replace anyone remained exactly where he had promised she would stay—for the rest of her natural life.
