Otha Anders, a 73-year-old resident of Louisiana, spent more than 45 years collecting every penny he found or received in change. His unusual habit began when he discovered a single penny on the ground, which he believed served as a reminder from God to pause, pray, and give thanks. From that moment, Anders decided never to ignore a penny. Instead, he carefully saved every one he came across, refusing to spend them even when it would have been easier than breaking larger bills. Over the decades, his collection steadily grew as he made sure every purchase included pennies in his change. Friends, students, and family members became familiar with his dedication, though he insisted on paying anyone who offered him pennies because he wanted the collection to represent his own effort and commitment.
After 45 years, Anders accumulated an incredible collection of pennies stored in 15 large five-gallon water jugs. When a costly dental bill arose and concerns about insurance coverage for the coins increased, he finally decided it was time to cash them in. Employees at Origin Bank in Ruston, Louisiana, welcomed the longtime customer and used a coin-counting machine to process the enormous collection. By the end of the five-hour counting session, Anders had turned his lifelong savings into $5,136.14, proving that patience, consistency, and a simple daily habit can produce remarkable results.
