A Single Carpenter Fought to Keep Five Siblings Together — Then the Judge Learned His Secret

The courtroom went silent when the state’s attorney said five children would be sent to three different counties by Friday. Eli, only six, pulled his three-year-old sister Lila closer while the four-year-old twins held hands beneath the bench. I sat beside my attorney, Diane, wearing a borrowed tie and work boots dusted with sawdust, trying to hide my shaking hands. Three weeks earlier, I had been a single carpenter with a quiet workshop and $28,000 in savings. Then I saw their faces on an emergency placement registry and spent nearly all of it building bedrooms, installing smoke detectors, buying five car seats, and preparing for inspection. I had never raised a child, but I knew exactly what it felt like to lose a family.

During the recess, Diane warned me that my chances were slim. The state argued that I had no spouse, no co-guardian, and no medical plan ready to cover five young dependents. Beverly, the senior caseworker, admitted that good intentions could not prove I was prepared. I showed her inspection receipts, pediatric appointments, school forms, and photographs of the oak bunk beds I had built by hand. Still, the judge wanted to know why I had chosen these five children. When the state’s attorney asked about the missing years in my childhood record, I realized the secret I had protected for twenty years was about to decide their future.
