Every question I asked ended with the same mysterious answer: “You don’t understand.”

After my mother’s funeral, Elias stopped me before I returned inside. His weathered hands trembled as he looked toward the kitchen window one last time. Then he reached inside his coat and pulled out a silver locket my mother had claimed she had lost years ago. Looking directly into my eyes, he whispered, “Your mother wanted you to know the truth,” before placing it in my hands.
