Silent Worthiness

Marlene pushed a glass of water toward me and smiled while her family enjoyed expensive lobster around the table. “We don’t provide extra food,” she said, making sure everyone heard. My son Michael sat beside her and quietly told me I should know my place. I had spent my life raising him alone, sacrificing everything so he could succeed, but that night he watched me being humiliated without defending me.

I did not argue. I simply smiled and said, “Noted.” They thought I was defeated, but they never knew the truth about the woman sitting silently at that table. They had no idea who owned the restaurant they were eating in.
