When my younger sister begged me to co-sign a lease for the bakery she dreamed of opening, I ignored every warning. She promised we would build something together and swore family always came first. On opening day, she stood before the cheering crowd and smiled into the microphone. Then she thanked everyone except me before announcing someone else’s name as her “true partner.” I stood frozen in the back as strangers applauded, unaware that my signature—and my savings—had made everything possible. Just then, a lawyer walked through the front door holding a thick envelope with my name on it.
