The next morning Elena entered the lawyer’s office expecting humiliation, not comfort. Marlene sat beside her brothers like a judge waiting for a verdict and immediately demanded to know when Elena planned to leave “their father’s house.” Instead of producing a will, the lawyer first handed Elena a small wooden box. Elena then read aloud one line from Russell’s letter. He wrote that he had known she was pregnant before she did and had quietly arranged medical care because he wanted her and the baby protected. The letter was dated weeks before his death. Marlene’s accusation collapsed under the evidence. Grant and Wesley fell silent, finally realizing that their father had acted deliberately and with a clear mind. Elena left the office carrying only the box and the letter, while the fortune everyone expected her to celebrate felt strangely unimportant beside the proof that Russell had truly loved her.
