What Kind of Vehicle Uses Green Lights? Understanding Courtesy Warning Lights on Personal Cars Driven by Volunteer Firefighters and Emergency Responders Across Many Regions

Many drivers have been surprised to see a personal car or truck approaching with flashing green lights, only to learn later that it was not a police vehicle or an ambulance. In numerous places across the United States and Canada, these green lights are used by volunteer firefighters, emergency medical technicians, and other first responders traveling in their own vehicles to a fire station or emergency scene. The lights serve as a visual signal that the driver is heading somewhere urgent, even though the vehicle itself is an ordinary civilian car.

Unlike the red and blue lights on official emergency vehicles, green lights are generally classified as “courtesy lights.” They ask other drivers to yield when it is safe to do so, but they do not automatically grant the same legal privileges. In most jurisdictions, the volunteer behind the wheel must still obey speed limits, stop signs, and traffic signals. Other motorists are not always legally required to pull over, though many communities encourage drivers to make way as a practical courtesy because every second can matter in an emergency response.

The specific rules vary significantly by state and province. Some places limit green lights to volunteer ambulance or EMS members, while others authorize them for volunteer firefighters. A few regions also use green lights on incident command vehicles at emergency scenes so arriving responders can quickly locate the person in charge. Authorization typically requires a permit from the local fire department or EMS agency, and the lights are meant to be used only when the volunteer is actively responding to a call. Unauthorized use of green warning lights can result in fines.

Public awareness remains limited, which is why stories of drivers being pulled over for not yielding to green lights continue to circulate. Officers sometimes stop motorists simply to explain the meaning of the lights rather than to issue a ticket, especially when the driver genuinely did not recognize the signal. Education campaigns by fire departments often emphasize that yielding, when safe, helps volunteers reach the station faster so they can then respond in a properly equipped apparatus.

Understanding these distinctions reduces confusion on the road. Seeing green lights does not mean the vehicle has the full authority of a fire truck or ambulance, but it does indicate that a trained volunteer is on the way to help. Giving them a little extra space when possible supports the community’s emergency response system without requiring drivers to break traffic laws themselves. The next time a car with green lights appears, the safest and most helpful reaction is usually to remain calm, check surroundings, and yield if it can be done safely.
