I stayed in the garden long enough to record every word on my phone, the whole plan laid out in Danielle’s father’s confident voice. Then I slipped back out the front gate, checked into a hotel twenty minutes away, and made three calls before midnight. The first was to my attorney, who had drafted every document tied to the estate and knew exactly how it was structured. The second was to my private banker. The third was to Rosalie, whose phone I knew she kept on silent by the bed. I left her a single voicemail. “I’m home. I heard everything. Say nothing to anyone. Trust me until morning.”

What none of them understood, least of all Julian, was that the estate had never been mine to sell alone, and it had never been Rosalie’s to be pressured into signing away either. Years earlier, my attorney and I had placed the entire property into an irrevocable trust, with protections written specifically to survive exactly this kind of scheme. Danielle’s family had spent the whole evening celebrating the theft of something that could not legally be taken. And by the time the sun came up, they were about to learn just how thoroughly they had trapped themselves.
