Marlene pushed a glass of water toward me and smiled while her family enjoyed expensive lobster around the table. “We don’t provide extra food,” she said, making sure everyone heard. My son Michael sat beside her and quietly told me I should know my place. I had spent my life raising him alone, sacrificing everything so he could succeed, but that night he watched me being humiliated without defending me.
