I walked out of that bathroom bracing for more humiliation. Instead, the whole cabin was turned toward the woman who had tormented me, and she was no longer sneering. She was pale, sweating, and gripping the armrest of the seat she’d insisted was too crowded. While I had been crying behind the locked door, she had stood up to continue her complaint to a supervising flight attendant and collapsed in the aisle. A doctor two rows back was already kneeling beside her, checking her pulse, asking her to describe what she felt.
The flight attendant guided me gently back toward my row, and for a moment I didn’t understand why everyone had gone so quiet. Then I saw it. The woman who had demanded I be moved for taking up too much space was now being carefully laid across three empty seats in the back, the ones the crew had cleared to let her lie flat. The irony was not lost on a single person on that plane. She had spent twenty minutes insisting one seat was too much for me. Now she needed three, and a stranger’s kindness, just to stay conscious.
