During the lunch rush the Thompsons stormed back, red-faced and threatening a lawsuit for defamation. Mr. Caruso remained calm. He pointed out that the story never showed their faces or names. Calling the police would mean admitting they were the ones who had walked out on an $850 bill. Surrounded by customers already lifting their phones, Mrs. Thompson hissed at her husband to just pay. He slammed a credit card on the counter, added a tip, and asked if we would tell people they had settled. Mr. Caruso only smiled and said, “We’ll see.” Applause followed them out the door.
Later that evening Mr. Caruso called me into his office. He said I had shown patience and professionalism under pressure and offered me the position of assistant manager with a raise and better hours. I accepted. Looking back, we could have called the police immediately. Instead the situation brought the restaurant more business than the unpaid bill had cost, and the people who treated others like servants learned that some nights the tables turn.
