It started as a normal Friday night until the Thompsons walked in. Mr. Thompson demanded the best window table, extra cushions, and barked orders while his wife complained about the lighting and insisted her glass be spotless. Their teenagers never looked up from their phones. They snapped their fingers for refills, sent back steak for being overcooked, and declared the soup too salty. By dessert I was holding back tears. When I returned with the bill the table was empty. A napkin read: “Terrible service. The waitress will pay for our tab.” The total was $850.
I showed the note to our manager, Mr. Caruso, expecting anger. Instead he smiled and called it an opportunity. A nearby customer named Nadine, a food blogger, had recorded their behavior without meaning to. She offered the footage. That night the local news aired the story with faces blurred and ran the video of the finger-snapping, the soup rejection, and the constant demands. By morning social media was flooded with support. Customers poured in. The restaurant’s page filled with messages praising patience and condemning the family’s entitlement.
