The ocean can look calm and inviting, yet its surface sometimes hides conditions far more dangerous than they appear. One unusual phenomenon is the formation of square waves—a strange grid-like pattern that makes the sea look as if it has been divided into neat squares. While fascinating to observe, these patterns signal complex underwater dynamics that require real caution and respect.

Square waves, scientifically known as a cross sea, form when two different wave systems travel across one another at significant angles. Instead of moving in a single direction, the waves intersect and create a distinctive crosshatched appearance on the surface. From a distance the result can look almost unreal.
