My Mother-in-Law Lived Rent-Free in My Apartment for Two Years, Then Demanded $250 to Watch My Son for Forty Minutes — My Husband’s Reply Sent Me Downstairs

My husband’s mother and sister had lived in my apartment for two years without paying a dime of rent, and they never once worried about groceries either. The apartment had belonged to me long before I met my husband. My name was the only one written on the lease. My income covered the rent, the electricity, the internet, the weekly grocery runs, the household supplies from Walmart, the extra chicken nuggets my son loved, and the takeout on nights when everyone was too exhausted to cook. They had arrived carrying overnight bags and rehearsed expressions of gratitude, and somehow, without a single real conversation, they became permanent residents. Their mugs sat beside my sink. Their shampoo filled half my shower. I kept telling myself I was simply being generous. They were family. I had the room.

The afternoon everything changed was almost insultingly ordinary. Our babysitter canceled last minute, and I had a short meeting I couldn’t miss. My son stood by the kitchen island in his little sneakers, clutching the green snack cup he carried everywhere. I asked my mother-in-law, “Could you watch him for forty minutes?” She lifted her eyes from her phone, studied me calmly, and said, “Two hundred fifty dollars.”
