Before Going to Sleep There Is One Kitchen Appliance You Must Unplug at All Costs to Avoid a Fire — Leaving It Plugged In Quietly Raises the Risk of Overnight Disaster

Most people lock the doors, turn off the lights, and check the stove before bed, yet one small kitchen appliance is frequently left plugged in without a second thought. That appliance is the toaster—or its close relative, the toaster oven. Safety experts and fire departments regularly warn that this everyday device is responsible for a surprising number of house fires that begin in the middle of the night while families are asleep. The danger is not dramatic or obvious. It builds quietly from heat, crumbs, and a power source that remains live long after the last slice of bread has been removed.

Toasters and toaster ovens generate intense concentrated heat in a short time. When crumbs, grease, or food particles collect at the bottom of the appliance—as they almost always do—they can smolder or ignite if residual heat or an electrical fault occurs. Even after the toasting cycle ends, the heating elements remain hot for several minutes. If the toaster is left plugged in, a power surge, a failing switch, or simply the slow accumulation of debris can create the conditions for a fire hours later. Unlike a stove that people usually remember to shut off, a toaster often sits on the counter still connected to the outlet, looking completely harmless.
