Before Going to Sleep There Is One Kitchen Appliance You Must Unplug at All Costs to Avoid a Fire — Leaving It Plugged In Quietly Raises the Risk of Overnight Disaster

Unplugging the toaster takes only a few seconds and removes the electrical energy that could turn a small fault into a full blaze. Fire-safety organizations recommend making it part of the nightly routine: after the last use of the day, pull the plug from the wall. The same advice applies to toaster ovens, which combine heating elements with a more enclosed space that can trap heat and smoke. Other appliances such as coffee makers and slow cookers also deserve attention, but the toaster remains the single most common kitchen culprit in overnight electrical fires because of how frequently it is used and how easily people forget about it once breakfast is over.

Creating the habit is straightforward. Keep the toaster in a visible spot so the dangling cord serves as a reminder. Empty the crumb tray regularly. Never operate the appliance when it is near curtains, paper towels, or wooden cabinets. These small steps cost almost nothing yet dramatically lower the chance of waking to smoke or worse. As more households quietly add “unplug the toaster” to their bedtime checklist, one practical question remains—how many other ordinary kitchen appliances are still sitting plugged in at night simply because they look too familiar to seem dangerous?
