Every year my husband and I host our family cookout, and Melissa, my sister-in-law, always finds a way to surprise everyone. This time, she arrived early, smiling, helping decorate, and acting unusually kind. I wondered if she had finally changed. I reached the object before Melissa could grab it. My hands shook as I unfolded the white fabric and realized it was not what I expected. Inside was a small bag containing old family photographs, documents, and a handwritten letter. I looked at Melissa, confused, because the items belonged to my late mother-in-law’s belongings that had been stored safely in the garage. Before I could ask anything, Melissa started crying and admitted she had taken them because she believed she had a right to them.
